Marathon County Horses (Seizure Case)

We were contacted by the Marathon County, Wi Sheriff's office and Humane Society and asked to take 5 horses that had been abandoned at a foreclosed property.  They arrived at the rescue on August 20, 2010.  Two of them were in such bad shape that they were unsure if they would make the 3 hour ride but as always, horses can surprise and amaze you at their will to live.  These young horses had been kept in a small area with no food and no water.  Keep in mind it has been a very hot and humid summer and they were given nothing!  It appeared that what they had been eating were fence posts, dirt and tires.  The story is that the owner had picked them up at various sales, the owner had been previously warned about the condition of the horses, the property where they were kept had been foreclosed on,  and they were abandoned and basically, left to die.  Even though we were very near our limit on number of horses, we could not turn these horses away for something they had no control over.

The ages of the five range from 2-4 years.  They are all very, very friendly -- will follow you around, allow you to pick up their feet, and have good ground manners.  There are 2 fillies, 1 stud colt and 2 geldings.

The oldest of the group (4 year old gelding) arrived with shoes on his front feet.  They appeared to have been on for quite some time.  Shelly Fehn from Heal the Hoof in Maple Plain, MN volunteered to pull the shoes and trim up his feet.

Their recovery is going to take some time and it involves lots and lots of groceries, TLC, possible medical care (so far they have been doing very well), farrier work, etc.  Any and all donations to help with their care would be appreciated.  Please check back and watch their progress.

If you think making a donation to a rescue doesn't make a difference, think about the fate of these horses.  All these horses are now getting a second chance at life because of people who care.  If you would like to help with their costs, please check out our donate page to find out how.
