Update: Mustang Sally is no longer pregnant. We are unsure if it was the poor nutrition (prior to her coming to the rescue) or if she's older than we thought. She is doing very well and we will have further updates coming soon.
Channel 9 (Fox 9 News locally) came to the rescue on January 21, 2008 to follow up on a story that they have been doing on these horses. They started following these horses at the time of their seizure.

Barron County Horses (Seizure Case)

We had been in contact with Barron County Sheriff's Department about these horses for some time. The pictures above were taken in September of 2007. The owners had been reported a number of times for neglect but the law was unable to help these horses until December of 2007. Their situation had changed. The owners had been evicted and the horses were abandoned. One of the horses left in the bottom level of the barn had to be euthanized because of the neglect he suffered. He had been trying to survive by eating a tractor! This is the same breeder that Misty, Raja and Spice came from. Read their story. Our rescue was at capacity, however, we could not turn these horses away for something they had no control over. We need monetary donations, hay, alfalfa cubes and grain to help with their continued recovery.
The pictures below were taken a couple of weeks after their arrival at the rescue. They have all been given names and are steadily gaining weight.
Scotty - Grey Arabian stallion (will soon be gelded) has evidently been handled in the past and is a very nice boy. He is the "dad" to Raja, Misty, Spice and the two babies that arrived with him. We are unsure of his age. Adopted.

Mustang Sally - Sally is a mustang mare of unknown age. She arrived underweight and pregnant (Sally was unable to carry the foal to term, however, she is doing very well). Adopted.

Jesse - Mare (unknown age). We are not sure if Jesse is pregnant - chances are pretty good because the stallion (Scotty) was in with the mares. If she is pregnant, we are anticipating that it would be a late foal next year. Adopted.

Gabby - We were told in September that she is a Mini/Arab cross and that her mom had died. We also believe she would be around 2 years old. Gabby was kept away from the rest of the herd in a barn along with a horse that had to be euthanized because of starvation. Gabby is sweet and easy to handle. Because she was kept out of the herd, we are assuming that she has not been bred.

Gabby has been adopted! She has been settling in very well with her new
"mom!"

Zena - One of two fillies that were taken. We have determined that Jesse is Zena's mom and we know that Scotty is the dad. We believe that she is a spring 2007 foal. Because of the condition of the mares and the lack of proper nutrition, Zena will most likely remain quite small. She has probably had very little human handling, however, with patience and a small area to work in, she has been coming around very nicely. Currently in foster care.
Jewel - One of two fillies that were taken. We have determined that Sally is Jewel's mom (which makes her 1/2 Arab and 1/2 Mustang) and we know that Scotty is the dad. We believe that she is a spring 2007 foal. Because of the condition of the mares and the lack of proper nutrition, Jewel will most likely remain quite small. She has probably had very little human handling, however, with patience and a small area to work in, she has been coming around very nicely. Currently in foster care.

If you think making a donation to a rescue doesn't make a difference, think about the fate of these horses. All these horses are now getting a second chance at life because of people who care. If you would like to help with their costs, please check out our donate page to find out how.
